You eat the right foods, you exercise, you sleep well and with enough hours. Yet, you don’t feel healthy. Maybe you are not getting enough nutrients from the food you eat. Eating healthy is one thing, but knowing what you should eat, depends mainly on what nutrient is lacking in your body.
The human body requires optimum amount of vitamins and minerals. Other people may need certain vitamins in greater amounts than other people. There are at least 30 vitamins, minerals, and dietary components that your body needs but cannot manufacture on its own in sufficient amounts. There is a list of various vitamins and minerals that are vital to human body functions.
Vitamins are complex chemical substances contained mainly in food. They enable the body to break down and use the basic elements of food, proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Certain vitamins are also involved in producing blood cells, hormones, genetic material and chemicals in your nervous system. Most vitamins cannot be made in your body, so they must be acquired from food. One exception is vitamin D, which is made in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. Bacteria present in the gut can also make some vitamins.
Vitamins and minerals are often called micronutrients because your body needs only tiny amounts of them. Yet failing to get even those small quantities virtually guarantees disease. Here are a few examples of diseases that can result from vitamin deficiencies. The most common vitamin and micronutrient-deficiency diseases are the following:
- Scurvy
- Scurvy is a disease caused by a diet that lacks vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Patients develop anemia, debility, exhaustion, edema (swelling) in some parts of the body, and sometimes ulceration of the gums and loss of teeth.
- Blindness
- Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children and increases the risk of disease and death from severe infections. In pregnant women VAD causes night blindness and may increase the risk of maternal mortality.
- Rickets
- Rickets is a disorder caused by a lack of vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate. It leads to softening and weakening of the bones. Vitamin D helps the body control calcium and phosphate levels. If the blood levels of these minerals become too low, the body may produce hormones that cause calcium and phosphate to be released from the bones. This leads to weak and soft bones.
